Crabtree Falls is one of the first waterfalls I visited when I started my adventuring on a more regular basis. While I did visit a couple other waterfalls prior on this trip, it is the one that really impressed me the most. I actually almost made an attempt at it the previous day, but I was running out of daylight. I glad I waited as I was able to spend a good amount of time enjoying the falls. After taking pictures, I sat for a long while snacking and just enjoying the falls as other groups came and went. I was able to sit close enough to the falls that I could feel the mist and with it being a warm day, it felt great. It is a waterfall visit I will never forget, and one that truly helped renew my interest in waterfalls.
The hike is on the moderate side. Since it's downhill to the falls from the parking area, it is mostly uphill to get back to your car. You gain roughly 700 feet in elevation during the hike back. I ended up doing an out and back, but there is a loop, and I plan to return some day and complete the loop.
I was there on the Monday after a holiday weekend and there were still quite a few groups, but not too many. I can say with near certainty that if you visit on a weekend during nice weather, you are sure to have a good crowd.
The hike has an old parking area that is now closed, and you are required to park near the campground. I suspect this is a permanent change, and the trail is well marked.
This falls is still one of my favorites for many reason. It is well worth the trip, along with a few others in the area, like Linville, Grassy Creek, and Setrock. If you get an early enough start, you should be able to visit all 4 in he same day. Because this falls has a special place in my heart, it gets a bit of a rating boost, but even without the boost, it's one of the best I've visited to date, and I'm sure to return soon. I would rate it 9/10.
